Trident ID (TRusted IDENTity) is the name given to the new identification cards which are replacing the legacy ID cards that were suspectible to forgery and durability issues.

In the future, residents will also be able to use their Trident ID to pay for bus fares on routes served by the Barbados Transport Board. This is possible because Trident ID cards support contactless technology.

Applying for a Trident ID card

You must be a Barbadian citizen or a foreign national with permanent residency, immigrant status, a work permit [1], a student visa [1], a Welcome Stamp visa, a CARICOM Skilled National certificate, a Special Entry permit or Rights of Establishment.

To apply for a Trident ID card, please visit the Electoral and Boundaries Commission at Warrens Tower II, St. Michael. There is no charge for the first issue of a Trident ID card if you apply before October 23, 2023.

It is not currently possible to apply via the official website due to technical issues. Persons who applied on the website before online applications were suspended are asked to book an appointment to visit the Commission at Warrens Tower II to complete the registration process. Upon entering the building, the Commission occupies the first room on the left. Please speak to the receptionist before taking a seat, even if you have an appointment.

Documentation you must furnish for registration

Barbadian citizens

You may furnish either your—

  • birth certificate; or
  • Barbadian passport (even if it has expired); or
  • Barbados ID card if it was issued on or after January 1st, 2018.

If you've never registered before, you are required to furnish photographic proof of identity (e.g. your passport).

Foreign nationals

You must furnish your foreign passport and the visa or certificate that proves your entitlement to reside in Barbados. Visitors are not eligible to register.

Persons on the Welcome Stamp visa must ensure their visa shows an Issue Date before applying. If your visa does not show an Issue Date, which should be emailed to you after you arrive in Barbados, you will need to contact the Immigration Department to request a copy of your visa with the Issue Date affixed.

Replacing your Trident ID card

All Trident ID cards have an expiration date, which is usually 10 years following the date on which it was issued. For persons residing in Barbados on a work permit or Welcome Stamp visa, the expiration date will match that of the work permit or visa. If you need to replace your Trident ID card, you are required to visit the Electoral and Boundaries Commission at Warrens Tower II, St Michael.

You will be charged a fee of BDS $60 if your Trident ID needs to be replaced because—

  • there is a change in any information printed on the card; or
  • the card is lost, stolen, damaged, destroyed, tampered with or defaced; or
  • your personal appearance has changed significantly from that reflected in the photograph on the card.

[1] Work permit / student visa must be valid for six months or longer.
